Organic traffic from search results is arguable the best traffic you can get for making money. People looking for something specific, having found you in a search engine, are more likely to click on your contextual ads or buy something from your affiliate sales campaign having found that something on your website.
This means it’s vital to have your webpages indexed by all the major search engines. The king of all search engines, Google, is the most important engine of all. If you could only choose one, make sure it’s Google.
But how does one normally get indexed? Usually the answer is time. Google sends bots all over the internet and will find you eventually, and if they think you have good content, will begin indexing your web pages. That is the only way your webpage will come up in a search, is if it is indexed.
You can, and should speed up the process a bit. You can suggest your webpages to the various search engines. Most of them have a page where you can submit your web page for inclusion, and that will let them know you have a new website and to go out and take a look.
You don’t have to be passive though, you can get a bit more active. You need to let Google know not only about your website, but all the pages in your website. The content is in the pages, and it’s your good content that will help people find your site organically once it’s indexed by Google (then you can get yourself some weighting by having lots of one way links, but that’s another topic).
What you need to do is two things:
- Open up an account with Google Webmaster tools and follow their instructions to verify your website
- Submit an XML sitemap
Your submission of an XML sitemap shows Google all the pages of your website, it makes it easier for them to crawl them. If it’s easier for them, they are more likely to crawl your site and sooner. And the sooner and more thoroughly Google crawls your site, the better.
If you use self hosted wordpress for a blog, there are sitemap plugins that can help you generate a sitemap. The same goes for CMS systems like Joomla. If you cannot find anything like that, visit this website and follow the instructions for your XML sitemap. You won’t regret these steps when more of your webpages are indexed more quickly and you get more targeted traffic, which will equal more money for you.
